Coal India Limited (CIL) is Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) that comes under Ministry of Coal, Government of India. It has also earned status of Maharatna. It is head quartered in Kolkata, India. The main function of this largest coal producing company is that it produces non-coking and coking coal of various grades for diverse applications.
The company conducts recruitment process every year to select new candidates. It also selects candidates through GATE exam. The selection process consists of 3 rounds. These rounds are as follows:
- Written Exam
- Technical Interview
- HR Interview
- Minimum 60% marks or 6 CGPA in relevant engineering field is required. There is relaxation for SC/ST/PH wherein they require a minimum of 55% marks.
- B.E/B.Tech (Mining , Electrical , Mechanical , Civil , Electronics & Communication , Industrial Engineering) are eligible.
Pattern of GATE Exam
The Coal India test pattern contains the following sections:

The total time allotted to the written exam is 180 minutes. There is a negative marking of 0.33 in the paper.
- Aptitude section consists of maths questions from the topics like algebra, time & work, time, speed & distance, arithmetic, percentages, profit & loss, geometry, etc. This section also includes questions from reasoning section. This section is of moderate level.
- Technical section involved questions from core subjects of Mechanical, electronics, electrical and civil engineering. This section was tough and required thorough preparation. A person whose basics are clear could easily excel in this section.
Overall the level of the paper is moderate to difficult. Only those candidates who clear the written exam will qualify for the next round.
