Schlumberger’s aptitude test is a part of its recruitment process. The main objective of this test is to assess the mental capabilities and skills of a candidate such as analytical ability, problem solving and decision making skills, comprehension skills, etc. Schlumberger’s aptitude questions revolve around three broad areas – quantitative aptitude, verbal ability and logical reasoning.
In this article, we are providing certain sample quantitative aptitude questions asked by Schlumberger:
Shyam’s rich uncle gave him Rs. 100 on his first birthday. On each birthday after that he doubled his previous gift. By the day after Shyam’s eighth birthday, what was the total amount that his uncle had given him?
Rs. 25,500
Rs. 25,400
Rs. 25,450
Rs. 25,600
Answer: Option 1
The money given to Shyam = Rs (100 + 200 + 400 + 800……).
This series is a G.P. with r = 2 and no. of terms = 8.
So sum = a(rn-1)/(r-1) = 100(28-1)/(2-1) = 25,500.
A train travels a distance of 300 km at a constant speed. If the speed of the train is increased by 5 km an hour the journey would have taken 2 hours less. The original speed of the train was
25 km/hr
20 km/hr
28 km/hr
30 km/hr
Answer: Option 1
Going by the options, in the first option if the original speed of the train is 25 km/h then time taken to travel 300 km = 12 hrs.
Now if the speed becomes 30 km/h then time taken will be 10 hrs.
So this time 2 hrs will be saved as given in the question.
One type of liquid contains 25 % of milk, the other type of liquid contains 30 % of milk. A can is filled with 6 parts of the first liquid and 4 parts of the second liquid. Find the percentage of milk in the new mixture.
23%
27%
50%
13%
Answer: Option 2
6X25/100 + 4X30/100 / 6+4 X 100
= 6/4 + 12/10 / 10 X 100
= 30+24 / 20X10 X 100 = 27%
In a class with a certain number of students if one student weighing 50 kg is added then the average weight of the class increases by 1 kg. If one more student weighing 50 kg is added then the average weight of the class increases by 1.5 kg over the original average. What is the original average weight (in kg) of the class?
46
4
2
47
Answer: Option 4
Let x be the original average and n be the number of students
From the first increase in the average, we get
nx+50 =(n+1)(x+1)
nx+50 =nx+n+x+1
n+x=49 ……(i)
From the second increase in the average, we get
nx+50+50= (n+2) (x+1.5)
nx+100=nx+ 1.5 n + 2x+3
1.5n+2x = 97 …….(ii)
Solving(i) and (ii) we get the value of x = 47.
A solution of sugar syrup has 15 % sugar. Another solution has 5 % sugar. How many litres of the second solution must be added to 20 litres of the first solution to make a solution of 10 % sugar?
10 litres
5 litres
15 litres
20 litres
Answer: Option 4
By allegation
Required ratio = 10 – 5 : 15 – 10 = 5 : 5.
So ratio is 1:1.
Hence the same quantity of other solution should be used.
A trader owes a merchant Rs. 10,028 due 1 year hence. The trader wants to settle the account after 3 months. If the rate of interest is 12% per annum, how much cash should he pay?
Rs. 9,025
Rs. 9,200
Rs. 9,600
Rs. 9,560
Answer: Option 2
Let Shyam’s share = Rs s and Ram’s share
be Rs r.
So, s×(1.05)9 = r×(1.05)11→ s/r = 441/400
→s = Rs 441/841 X Rs 5887 = Rs 3087.
Rs. 5,887 is divided between Shyam and Ram, such that Shyam’s share at the end of 9 years is equal to Ram’s share at the end of 11 years, compounded annually at the rate of 5%. The share of Shyam is
Rs. 2,088
Rs. 2,000
Rs. 3,087
None of these
Answer: Option 3
Let Shyam’s share = Rs s and Ram’s share
be Rs r.
So, s×(1.05)9 = r×(1.05)11→ s/r = 441/400
→s = Rs 441/841 X Rs 5887 = Rs 3087.
The average marks of a student in 8 subjects is 87. Of these, the highest marks are 2 more than the one next in value. If these two subjects are eliminated, the average marks of the remaining subjects are 85. What are the highest marks obtained by him?
94
91
89
96
Answer: Option 1
Let highest marks be x + 2, so next score = x.
Total of 8 subjects = 8 × 87 = 696.
So as per the question.
696-x-x-2/6 = 85
x = 92
So highest marks = 94.
